For a moment in time
And it seemed everlasting
That you would always be mine

Now you want to be free
So I'm letting you fly
Cause I know in my heart babe
Our love will never die
No!

You'll always be a part of me
I'm a part of you indefinitely
Girl don't you know you can't escape me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby
And we'll linger on
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby

I ain't gonna cry no
And I won't beg you to stay
If you're determined to leave girl
I will not stand in your way
But inevitably you'll be back again
Cause ya know in your heart babe
Our love will never end no

You'll always be a part of me
I'm part of you indefinitely
Girl don't you know you can't escape me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby
And we'll linger on
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby

I know that you'll be back girl
When your days and your nights get a little bit colder oooohhh
I know that, you'll be right back, babe
Ooooh! baby believe me it's only a matter of time

You'll always be a part of me
I'm part of you indefinitely
Girl don't you know you can't escape me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby
And we'll linger on
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my my baby....

You'll always be a part of me (you will always be)
I'm part of you indefinitely
Girl don't you know you can't escape me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby
And we'll linger on (we will linger on....)
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me
Ooh darling cause you'll always be my baby

The Ministry of Jesus Christ

After seventy years of captivity, the Lord allowed His people to come back to the land of Israel. Only a small group chose to return, but they as well as Jews elsewhere, still lived under the rule of other nations…

Five hundred years later, when Rome ruled Israel, two young Jews named Joseph and Mary, both descendants of the royal line of David, planned to marry. But before they came together, Mary became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit of God.

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Joseph, Don't worry about taking Mary as your wife: for the child in her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. The child is the Son of God. And when she gives birth to this son, you must name Him 'Jesus', which means Savior, for He will save His people from their sins.”

This happened as the prophet Isaiah had foretold, “The Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin will bare a son, and they will call Him Emmanuel, which means God with us.”

Joseph and Mary had to travel to the city of Bethlehem for a census and to pay taxes. And while there, Mary gave birth to her firstborn son whom they named Jesus. So, as prophesied, Jesus was born in Bethlehem to a descendant of King David.

And in the same country, there were shepherds watching over their flocks at night. And the angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were very frightened. Then the angel said, “Don't be afraid: for I bring good news of great joy, for all people. Today a Savior was born for you which is Christ the Lord.”

And the child grew, becoming strong in spirit; and the grace of God was on Him. Jesus matured, increasing in wisdom and in favor with God and man.

Now when Jesus was about thirty years of age, a man named John the Baptist came preaching and baptizing in the wilderness, saying, “Repent: Prepare yourselves for the Lord.”

John was the messenger the prophets had foretold would announce the coming of the Savior. Then Jesus came to the Jordan river to be baptized by John. And when John saw Jesus coming, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.”

And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up out of the water, and the heavens opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and light on Him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

then, after Jesus spent forty days in the desert, Satan, who had successfully tempted Eve in the Garden, tried ways of tempting Jesus—but Jesus would not sin.
Finally, Satan took Jesus to an especially high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Then Satan said, “All these things I will give to you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus answered, “Get away from me, Satan: because God has written that, you shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.”

While Jesus, the son of God, lived on earth in the form of a man, He was tempted in all the same ways we are, yet He never sinned.

So, where Adam failed, Jesus succeeded. This showed that Jesus indeed could be the Savior of mankind—the lamb sent from God.

Jesus revealed himself as the promised Savior in many ways, including performing countless miracles. At a wedding feast, He changed water into wine. He healed a man who had been lame for thirty-eight years.

A man full of leprosy—an untouchable—saw Jesus and fell on his face, saying, “Lord, if You want to, You can make me clean.”

Jesus then reached out his hand and touched him, saying, “Be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him.

Jesus brought sight to a man who had been blind from birth.

One woman, who for twelve years had a disease which doctors could not heal, reached out and touched Jesus' robe. He turned, saying, “Daughter, be comforted. Your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

Those suffering from different kinds of diseases were brought to Him, and He healed them all.

Jesus told him, “Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus asked, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb a second time and be born?”

Jesus explained, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. You should not be so amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’”

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?”

Jesus scolded him for teaching others about religion when he didn't understand spiritual truths himself. Then Jesus explained spiritual birth. “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world; He sent Him so that the world might be saved.

The real condemnation is this: light came into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. He who believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he who does not believe on the Son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God remains on him.”

Finally Nicodemus understood and believed.

To a foreign woman, Jesus said, “Whoever drinks the water that I give shall never thirst; it shall be a well of water within him, springing up into everlasting life.”

The woman said, “I know that the Messiah will come, who will be called Christ. When He comes, He will tell us everything.”

Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am that Messiah.”

Later, Jesus taught the people, saying, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and follow Me. For what does it benefit a person if he gains the wealth of the whole world and loses his own soul?

Watch out! Beware of greed: for a person's life does not consist in the abundance of the things which he owns, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting, and said, “What are we going to do? This man is performing so many miracles. If we let Him continue, everyone will believe on Him: and then the Romans revoke our right to control the people.”

Meanwhile, Jesus taught with great authority. He went into the temple and threw out the merchants who were inside, buying and selling. He said to them, “It is written in the Scriptures, My house is the house of prayer: but you have made it a den of thieves.”

And He taught saying, “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who believes on the Son may have everlasting life, and I will raise up from the grave those who believe. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believe, and who would betray Him.

So there was a split among the people because of Him. Among the chief rulers, many believed on Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess their belief since they were afraid they might be expelled from their religious meeting places. They loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Most of the religious leaders looked for a way to destroy Jesus, but could not find one, because all the people were anxious to hear Him when He spoke.

Jesus continued teaching in the Temple, saying, “I am the light of the world: whoever follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

And He said to those who believed on Him, “If you continue living as I tell you, then you are indeed My disciples. You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. I am the door; if any man comes to God through Me, he shall be saved. I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd gives his life for the sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall any man snatch them out of My hand.”

After three years of teaching, Jesus instructed His disciples to bring Him a certain young donkey, one that had never been ridden, and He sat on it. Then as He rode toward Jerusalem, a huge crowd began to rejoice and loudly praise God for all the mighty works which they had seen.

They called out, “Hosanna! Blessed be the King that comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.”

But when Jesus neared the city, he looked at it and cried over it because the people still did not recognize him as the promised Savior.

After His prayer, the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders arrived there, looking for Jesus. Judas, who had just eaten with Him, was leading the group. Judas approached Jesus, greeting Him with a kiss of betrayal.

Suddenly, Jesus identified himself to the mob by saying, “I AM.”

The crowd went backwards and fell to the ground.

After that, Jesus allowed himself to be tied up and brought into the high priest's house.

The temple officers who held Jesus ridiculed Him and spit in His face. And when they had blindfolded Him, they punched Him and slapped Him on the face, and then said, “Prophesy you holy man. Who hit you?”

Early the next morning, the crowd led Jesus to the Roman governor, Pilate. And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow corrupting our Jewish nation.”

But after questioning Jesus, Pilate told the chief priests, the rulers and the people; “He has done nothing worthy of death. I'll just order Him to be beaten and then release Him.”

Pilate, wanting to satisfy the people, had Jesus brutally whipped, and then turned Him over to be crucified.

But they called out all at once, saying, “Get rid of this man. Crucify Him. Crucify Him.”

The Roman soldiers braided a mock crown of thorns, placing it on His head, and they put a purple robe on Him. They said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they beat Him with their fists.

Afterwards they took Jesus and led Him away, making Him carry a wooden cross up to a place called Calvary, also known as Golgotha or the place of a skull.

There in the same area, where many years before God had told Abraham to sacrifice his only beloved son Isaac, they nailed Jesus, God's only beloved son, to the cross.

As they did this, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; they don't know what they are doing.”

While Jesus hung between two criminals who were also being executed, soldiers took His clothes, gambling for His robe, which fulfilled the prophetic words spoken by David.

For three hours, the people watched. The rulers with them mocked Jesus, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

Then a darkness came on the land which stayed for three more hours as the prophet's words were fulfilled: “The Lord laid the sins of us all on Him.”

Jesus then cried out with a loud voice, saying, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?” Jesus, knowing that everything was now accomplished, fulfilled scripture when He said, “I thirst.”

The soldiers ridiculed Jesus as they offered Him vinegar by saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

Jesus tasted the vinegar, then called out, “It is finished. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Then He bowed His head, and let His spirit go.

As He died, the sun darkened and the earth quaked, and the thick veil of the Temple ripped down the middle.

Now when the Roman captain in charge saw what happened, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two thieves who were hanging on the crosses beside Jesus.

But when the soldiers saw that Jesus was already dead, they didn't break His legs. Instead, one of them pierced His side with a spear, allowing blood and water to pour out.

All of this happened so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled: “None of His bones will be broken,” and “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Afterwards, two believers (Joseph and Nicodemus) took Jesus' body, wound it in linen grave clothes dipped in spices, and laid His body in a tomb. Then, as requested by the Jewish leaders, the tomb was sealed and guarded by Roman soldiers.

Resurrection to Eternity

Now, after three days, there was a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord rolled back the stone from the tomb's door. In fright, the Roman soldiers trembled and then ran away. When followers of Jesus came to the tomb and saw the stone moved, they were confused.

Suddenly, two men stood by them in shining garments, saying, “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here, He is risen. Remember how He told you before that He must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and the third day rise again?”

Then they remembered His words.

The same day in the evening, Jesus came to the disciples and stood among them and said, “Peace to you.”

But they were terrified, thinking that they were seeing a spirit.

So He said, “Look at my hands and my feet, it is really Me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, like you see I have. Everything happened as I told you it would because all the writings that described me in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, had to be fulfilled.”

Then He opened their understanding, saying, “It is written in the Scriptures that Christ must suffer and rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name among all nations. And you have seen these things.”

Jesus continued appearing to many people, showing them that He was alive, which gave infallible proof of His resurrection. And He instructed His disciples, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel.”

At the end of forty days, Jesus announced to His disciples, “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall tell others about Me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.”

As they watched, Jesus was taken up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. Two men in white clothing said, “Why are you standing there staring up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was just taken up into heaven, shall come back again in the same manner as you saw Him go.”

So the followers of Jesus went throughout the land, preaching and baptizing, telling everyone that Christ the Savior was risen from the dead. They showed in the Scriptures how by Adam came sin and death, but by Jesus Christ came forgiveness and the resurrection of the dead.

They told how one day all the new bodies of those who have trusted God and believed in Jesus as their Lord and Savior will be raised from the dead and, together with those who are alive, will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

God's book also says that Heaven will open, and Jesus will return to earth as the conquering King and righteous Judge.

And the name written on his clothes will be KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. And the armies which are in heaven will follow him upon white horses.

Jesus will stand on the Mount of Olives (just as the prophet Zechariah said), and the mountain will divide. And Christ will reign over all the earth. But when a thousand years expire, Satan will once more go out to deceive the nations, but fire will come down from God and devour those who follow Satan.

Then finally, Satan, the deceiver, will be thrown into the lake of fire and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

And then, in front of a great white throne, the dead, both small and great, will stand before God; and who ever is not found written in the Book of Life will be thrown into the lake of fire.

But in a new heaven and a new earth, God will be with His people. And God will wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. And there shall be no night and no need for candles, nor light from the sun; because the glory of God and the lamb will be the light; and They shall reign for ever and ever.

And the Tree of Life will be there and the curse on mankind will be gone.

Jesus says, "Let those who are thirsty come. Let them freely drink the water of life. Behold, I come quickly; blessed are they who obey My words.

He that hears My word, and believes on Him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not be condemned; but is passed from death unto life."

This is God's Story for you.

Guan Gong Culture

Guan Yu (关羽) was a historical person who lived in China during the Three Kingdoms period, (三国) (CE 220-CE 280).

Historical background
Towards the end of the Han dynasty (汉朝), the emperor had been reduced to a nominal ruler. Powerful clans and court officials fought against each other to become the power behind the throne. Meanwhile, disenfranchised peasant began series of uprising. The most severe of these movements was the Yellow Turban Rebellion (黄巾起义).

As the political disintegration intensified, regional warlords were no longer contented to be the power behind the throne. They aspired to be rulers of their own empire. Nevertheless, others remained loyal to the Han dynasty and sought to restore the power of the Han Emperor.

Guan Yu belonged to the group who aspired to restore the Han Dynasty. He had met two other persons with the same ideal; Liu Bei, (刘备)a distant member of the Han royal family and Zhang Fei (张飞). They became sworn brothers at the Peach Garden (桃园结义) and vowed to work together towards the revival of the Han Dynasty. Liu Bei was the eldest of the three brothers; Guan Yu was the second brother and Zhang Fei the youngest.

When the regional powers Cao Cao (曹操) and Sun Quan (孙权) proclaimed themselves Emperors Wei (魏) and Wu (吴), Liu Bei declared himself the Emperor of Shu (蜀) with the aim of restoring the Han dynasty, often referred to as Shu-Han (蜀汉). With this development, Chinese history entered the Three Kingdoms Period, (三国时代) a political scene that lasted for 60 years from CE 220 to 280.

As a General, Guan Yu was well known for this integrity, and bravery. As an individual, he was respected for his loyalty and righteousness. During a battle with Wu forces, Guan Yu was captured and beheaded.

Guan Gong culture
After his death, General Guan Yu became the embodiment of loyalty, righteous, bravery and benevolence(忠义勇仁) . Guan Yu’s brotherhood pact with Liu Bei and Zhang Fei provides strong imagery and symbolism for friends to look after each other in times of hardship. This idea offered motivation and role model for Chinese migrants when they arrive in their host society.

His popularity and the respect he commanded are reflected by the list of posthumous honors bestowed on him by subsequent emperors. During the Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng En wrote the novel San Guo Yan Xi (三国演义), Romance of the three Kingdoms, using the Three Kingdoms period as a backdrop and immortalized Guan Yu and his sworn brothers.

The Taoist worshipped Guan Yu as the god of literature、god of war and god of business and is referred to as Guan Gong (关公), Guan Di (关帝) and as a sign of respect. There are also spirit mediums or Tangkis who can manifest the spirit of Guan Yu.

In southern China and overseas Chinese community in Taiwan and South East Asia, Guan Gong is also manifested via spirit mediums.

The Chinese Buddhist regarded him as Sangharama Bodhisattva (伽蓝菩萨). As Sangharama Bodhisattva, Guan Gong is usually found in the Bell Tower of forest style Chinese Mahayana Buddhist Monastery. In the Hokkien temple Thian Hock Keng in Singapore, Guan Gong can be found both in his Taoist and Buddhist form.

Guan Gong is often depicted in paintings, sculptures and many art forms. When he is depicted with his sworn brothers, Liu Bei as the eldest brother is seated with Guan Gong and Zhang Fei by his side. If Guan Gong is the central figure, his two assistants, Guan Ping (关平) and Zhou Cang (周仓) stand by his side. He is also represented alone either standing with a saber or seated and at times reading. In many temples, a sculpture of his horse can usually be found.

Globalization of Guan Yu culture
Many overseas Chinese communities worship General Guan Gong and dedicated temples or set up altars in his memory. Such practices reflect the importance these communities placed on social solidarity and the need for mutual support in a foreign land. The notion of brotherhood has also been appropriated by triads to emphasize the group identify and brotherhood of triad membership.

The Buddhist worship of Guan Gong as Sangharama Bodhisattva is also practiced in some Theravada Buddhist temples and Guan Gong is also one of the pantheons in Vietnam’s Cao Dao religion.

The history and continuous popularity of Guan Gong reflects the collective ideals of the Chinese over time and how these ideals are manifested as they migrate overseas. Among the overseas Chinese community, the temples dedicated to Guan Gong also demonstrated how the traditional social ideals provided a model for migrants as they leave their homeland to seek opportunities. At the same time, Guan Gong’s appearance in Theravada cultures and Cao Dao in Vietnam also reflect the universality in the values he embodies.

Hungry Ghost Festival

The Chinese believe that on the 7th lunar month of each year, spirits of the deceased return to the human realm for a month. The seventh month is sometimes referred to as the ghost month, 鬼月, and the festival is commonly known as the “hungry ghost festival”.

Many people avoid important events during the 7th month. Activities to avoid include moving to new homes, weddings, and opening ceremony of new businesses.

Ullambana, Yulan Jie, 盂兰盆
The hungry ghost month is known to the Buddhist as the Ullambana, Yulan Jie, 盂兰盆. The background story told of the Maudgalyayana (Mu Lian), a disciple of the Buddha, who attempted to help his mother who was reborn into the realm of the hungry ghost. The Buddha instructed Maudgalyayana to perform acts of merit and to transfer the merits to his mother.

Following the Buddha’s advise, Maudgalyayana managed to transfer merit to his mother and to help her reborn into the human realm.

During Yulan Pen Jie, 盂兰盆, Buddhist offer prayers to deceased ancestors and wandering spirits to help them in their rebirth in higher realms. There are also prayer sessions in monasteries to pray and to dedicate merit to wandering spirits.

Zhong Yuan Jie, 中元节
The Hungry Ghost Festival is known to the Taoist as Zhong Yuan Jie, 中元节.

During this period, clan associations, temples, monasteries, businesses and families organize prayers and make food offerings and burn paper made clothes, daily necessities and luxury items to these spirits.

These paper items include credit card, clothes, cosmetic, XO cognac, beer, laptop, DVD players, mobile phones and larger items such as Mercedes, houses, planes, and ships.

Prayer events often end with a dinner for all participants and during the dinner, auctions are held to raise funds for charities. So while the rituals are meant for spirits visiting the human realm, the activities benefit the socially disadvantaged through charity auctions.

In Singapore and Malaysia, Zhong Yuan Jie includes a dinner for all participants complete with entertainment for both spirits and humans. In the past, it used to be Chinese operas but these days, the trend has shifted towards pop Chinese music on a makeshift stage known as Gei Tai 歌台.

In 1992, the Hungry Ghost festival rituals at the Kobe Kanteibyo (Guan Gong Temple) was designated as Kobe (Japan) City Community Folklore Intangible Cultural Asset.

Although there are some differences in the rituals and beliefs of between Buddhist and Taoist, it is not uncommon for Chinese to participate in both forms of worship or rituals during this period.

Qu Yuan 屈原

Quan yuan's coffin Qu Yuan 屈原was born to a Chu nobility family in Zigui, 秭归,around 340 BCE and served in the court of the state of Chu.

He lived during a period known as the era of the Warring States, 战国时代 in Chinese history. The era of the Warring States was a transitional period between the Zhou Dynasty 周朝 and the Qin Dynasty 秦朝. Towards the end of Zhou Dynasty, the nobilities became stronger and began building their state mechanism and developing their military capabilities.

Areas outside of Zhou domain also developed their state infrastructures and became emerging powers. As a result, the Zhou King became a nominal figurehead and eventually abolished.

The various regional powers expanded by conquering smaller and weaker state until 7 major principalities emerge to compete for the ultimate control of China. The 7 states were Qi (齐), Chu (楚), Yan (燕), Han (韩), Zhao (赵), Wei (魏) and Qin (秦). The rulers of the 7 states were often known as Dukes 公 or Marquis 侯 but eventually declared themselves as Kings 王.

The State of Qin through a series of reforms emerged as the most powerful of the 7 states and began exerting their power on neighboring states. The 6 state’s response alternated between alliance against Qin, 合纵and allegiance to Qin, 连横. The alliance strategy was unsuccessful because of mutual suspicion among the 6 states and the state of Qin was able to expand by attacking neighboring states while maintaining friendly ties with distant states, 进攻远和.

Qu Yuan who served in the Chu court advocated allegiance to resist the Qin expansion. The state of Chu was a major power but weaken because of political infighting and corruption. Qu Yuan himself became the victim of court politics, expelled from the Chu court, and lived in exile.

While in exile, he composed collections of poetry expressing patriotism for the state of Chu. In 278 BCE, the state of Qin attacked Chu and managed to sack the Chu capital Ying 郢, forcing the state of Chu to shift their capital.

When Qu Yuan heard about the fall of Chu capital, he was devastated and committed suicide by drowning himself in the Milo River 汨罗江.

The State of Chu managed to survived for another 25 years until 223 BCE when it was finally conquered by the state of Qin. By 221 BCE, the state of Qin managed to conquer the remaining states Yan and Qi to establish the Qin Dynasty 秦朝. The King of Qin proclaimed himself the First Emperor of China, 秦始皇.

The Qin dynasty lasted for only 15 years and was one of the shortest dynasties in the history of China. Despite its short rule, it produced the political model of central rule for subsequent dynasties and laid the foundation for the emergence of a homogenous Chinese culture.

These developments created a wider and broader collective identity that encompassed previous regional notions of identity. In the process, the legacy of Qu Yuan was transformed from loyalty to a regional kingdom into a symbol of patriotism for the Chinese ethnic group in its earliest sense.

The subsequent dynasties built a memorial and a tomb for Qu Yuan in Zigui County, his hometown. Unfortunately, these structures were submerged during the construction of the three gorges dam.

A new memorial hall to Qu Yuan is located on the Phoenix Hill.

Qu Yuan's legacy is commemorated through the consumption of Dumplings 粽子 or Zong Zi and Dragon Boat race 龙舟 every year on the day he committed suicide; the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.

The Kitchen God

Traditions assert that a mortal named Zhang was a wealthy farmer who owned an acreage of fertile land with great harvests and livestock. He had everything he needed and had a good family. However, one day he became attracted to a concubine and his wife eventually left him. He lived a vicarious life until he exhausted all his wealth. His concubine left him and he was left to wander the streets as a homeless beggar.

One day in the winter Zhang became too weak and fainted while knocking on a door begging for food. The lovely lady who answered the door took him in and nursed him back to health. When he awoke he found himself in a small kitchen next to the warm hearth. When he looked out the window he had seen his host. To his surprise it was his old wife. Embarrassed and not being able to look her in the face he jumped into the hearth. She tried to douse him with water but the fire kept on blaring and in a flash his ashes went to the heavens.

Upon receiving a report of Zhang's story, the Jade Emperor declared and appointed Zhang to be the Kitchen God. The heavenly ruler declared that someone who learned such a lesson would be all knowing and could influence the heavens for eternity.

Spring Festival traditionally begins on the 23rd or 24th of the 12th month of the lunar calendar. This day, called Xiao Nian which occurs about 7 days before the Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the holiday as the households begin "Spring Cleaning" to prepare for the New Year Celebration. This also marks the day the legendary Kitchen God is sent to everyone's house to oversee the affairs of the household. It is said that the Kitchen God on the last night of the twelfth month, returns to heaven to report back to the Jade Emperor about the harvest and behavior of the families.

It is therefore a tradition to offer sacrifices of sweet candies and/or cakes made of Lotus to the Kitchen God so that he has difficulty speaking and passing on any negative reports. Interestingly enough the sacrifice is a compromise since the Kitchen God never minds the sweet candy and usually accepts it.

On New Year's Eve (the last evening of the lunar year), the Kitchen god and various other gods will come down to earth to spend the New Year's Day with the mortals. On New Year's Eve people of all walks of life hold a feast to usher in the Gods. After the feast they burn kitchen God Prints, paper chairs, and paper horses while sprinkling over the flames three cups of liquor to bid the gods farewell. It is then responsibility of every family to pay respect to their ancestors. They might have a family tree with some food, drink and incense burning to their honor.

The Kitchen God is represented by a rice paper print and hung in the kitchen near the stove. He is considered the soul of the household and is usually placed near the hearth for that reason. After making sweet sacrifices to the Kitchen God, Qingdao locals burn the print so that the Kitchen God can go to the heavens and meet with the Jade Emperor (keep in mind that this is a Taoist tradition even though many non Taoist mainland Chinese have assimilated it into their culture).

There are many nationalities in China, and traditions vary from county to county and province to province. For instance, in Shandong many people burn the Kitchen God Print to send him to the Jade Emperor on Xiao Nian. In other places they wait untill New Year's Eve. Today, many people may have a wood version that sits near the stove as a permanent fixture. They also sell prints at temple fairs and cultural stores. These versions are not intended to be permanent fixtures in your kitchen and Kitchen God prints are sold separately for this annual burning.

The Kitchen God is an important deity in China. It is considered the soul of the kitchen in many households. Sacrifices are made to this deity in the belief that the Kitchen God will ensure that there is abundant food, good harvests, and good health. No matter where you are, if the locals believe in the Kitchen God, they will post a new print in the kitchen and a Door God on the door symbolizing that the Spring Festival is starting. The Kitchen God is always welcomed back to Qingdao!

Although a number of his peers decided to stay in the US, Lee Hoi Chuen decided to go back to Hong Kong after his wife gave birth to Bruce. Within months, Hong Kong was invaded and the Lees lived the ensuing 3 years and 8 months under Japanese occupation. The Lee family survived the war and had actually done reasonably well. After the war ended, Lee Hoi Chuen would resume his acting career and become an even bigger star during Hong Kong's rebuilding years.

Bruce Lee's mother Grace belonged to one of wealthiest and most powerful clans in Hong Kong, the Ho Tungs. She was the niece of Sir Robert Ho Tung, patriarch of the clan. As such, the young Bruce Lee grew up in an affluent and privileged environment. Despite this advantage of his family's status and because of the mass number of people fleeing communist China to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong neighborhood he grew up in became over-crowded, dangerous, and full of gang rivalries.

Post war Hong Kong was a tough place to grow up. Gangs ruled the city streets and Lee was often forced to fight them. But Bruce liked a challenge and faced his adversaries head on. To his parents dismay Bruce's street fighting continued and the violent nature of his confrontations was escalating.
After being involved in several street fights, his parents decided that Bruce Lee needed to be trained in the martial arts. Lee's first introduction to martial arts was through his father, Lee Hoi Cheun. He learned the fundamentals of Wu style Tai Chi Chuan from his father.
